General Rules for Carrying E-Cigarettes on Flights
Passengers are generally permitted to bring electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, e-hookahs) on airplanes. However, specific regulations govern how they must be transported and their use onboard.
Packing Instructions for E-Cigarettes and Batteries
Electronic smoking devices must be placed in carry-on baggage only. They are strictly forbidden in checked luggage due to the fire risk associated with their lithium batteries.

- Device: The e-cigarette device itself must be in your carry-on.
- Batteries: All spare lithium batteries for e-cigarettes must also be in carry-on baggage. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. This can be achieved by keeping them in their original retail packaging, taping over the terminals, or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch.
Prohibition of Use and Charging Onboard
The use and charging of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are strictly prohibited on board the aircraft at all times. This ban applies during boarding, while the aircraft is on the ground, throughout the flight, and during disembarkation. Tampering with smoke detectors in aircraft lavatories is also a serious offense.
Transporting E-Liquids
E-liquids are subject to standard restrictions for liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) in carry-on baggage:
- Each container of e-liquid must not exceed 100 milliliters (or 3.4 ounces).
- All such containers must fit comfortably within a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one liter.
- This bag must be presented separately for security screening.
Larger volumes of e-liquids may be transported in checked baggage, provided they are securely packed to prevent leakage.
Important Reminders
Regulations can differ between airlines and destination countries. It is crucial to:
- Verify with your specific airline regarding their most current policies before your trip.
- Be aware of and comply with the laws concerning e-cigarette use, possession, and importation at your destination, as some jurisdictions have stringent regulations or bans.
