Regulations for Electronic Cigarettes on Airplanes
Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), vapes, vape pens, and similar devices are generally permitted on airplanes, subject to specific regulations.
These devices must be transported in carry-on baggage only. They are prohibited in checked luggage due to the fire risk associated with their lithium-ion batteries.

Transporting E-Liquids
E-liquids are subject to the standard restrictions for liquids and gels in carry-on baggage:
- Containers must not exceed 100 milliliters (3.4 ounces).
- All containers must fit into a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one liter.
It is advisable to place e-liquids in a separate bin for security screening to facilitate the process.
Usage and Charging Prohibitions
The use and charging of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are strictly prohibited on board an aircraft at all times. This includes during boarding, in-flight, and while the aircraft is on the ground.
Non-compliance with this rule can result in significant penalties and disruption.
Key Considerations
- Airline and Destination Policies: Regulations can vary. Always verify the specific policies of your airline and the laws concerning e-cigarettes at your destination and any layover countries, as some locations may have outright bans.
- Device Protection: Ensure your device is switched off and protected against accidental activation. If batteries are removable, consider storing them separately in approved protective cases to prevent short circuits.
