In-Flight Use is Strictly Prohibited
Using vapes or e-cigarettes onboard any aircraft is banned. This prohibition includes both nicotine and cannabis-containing devices, regardless of cabin pressure changes activating some devices. Ignoring this rule can result in severe penalties, including fines, removal from the flight, and being banned by the airline.
Carry Luggage Rules (US FAA & TSA Regulations)
- Carry-On Allowed: You may bring electronic cigarettes, vape pens, vaporizers, e-cigars, and other personal vaporizers only in your carry-on bag or on your person.
- Checked Baggage Prohibited: Placing vapes or e-cigarettes in checked baggage is strictly against FAA regulations due to the fire risk posed by lithium batteries.
- Battery Safety: Spare lithium batteries for vapes must be carried in carry-on baggage. Each battery must be protected from short circuiting (e.g., original retail packaging, individual plastic bags, battery cases). Batteries with more than 100 watt-hours are generally prohibited.
- E-Liquid Restrictions: E-liquids are subject to the TSA liquids rule. Containers must be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less per item, placed inside a single, clear, quart-sized, resealable plastic bag. One bag per passenger.
International Travel & Transit Considerations
Regulations vary significantly by destination country. Many countries have outright bans on vaping products or specific regulations regarding nicotine content. Possession of a vape device in your carry-on, even if compliant for the flight, could lead to confiscation or legal trouble upon arrival or during transit. Always research the specific laws of your destination and any transit countries beforehand.
Device Preparation & Storage
Turn devices completely off before boarding. Prevent accidental activation during flight by engaging safety locks if available or temporarily disassembling the device. Keep the device and spare batteries within easy reach during the flight for emergency access if needed, but absolutely do not use them.
Consequences of Violations
- In-flight use: Immediate removal from the flight, potential fines, and placement on airline no-fly lists.
- Vapes in checked bags: Confiscation and potential delays or fines. Tampering with baggage to remove the device after check-in is dangerous and not permitted.
Airline-Specific Policies
While core FAA/TSA rules apply to all flights departing or landing in the US, specific airlines may have additional restrictions. Always consult your airline’s policy directly before travel.
Disposal at Security or Airports
If a vape device or battery is not compliant or if you have doubts upon arriving at security, dispose of it in a designated battery disposal bin (often available at checkpoints). Do not attempt to hide prohibited items.
