Alright, let’s yak about them candy cigarettes, the ones that puff out smoke, you know? I seen ’em around, kids playin’ with ’em. Makes ya think, what’s the big deal?
What are these candy cigarettes anyway?
Well, from what I gather, these ain’t real cigarettes, mind you. They just candy, shaped like cigarettes. Some are hard candy, some are gum with paper around ’em, like the real thing. And the fancy ones, they blow out this powdery stuff that looks like smoke. Kids think it’s fun, I guess.
- Hard candy kind
- Gum kind with paper
- The ones that puff out “smoke”
Back in the day, these things were everywhere.
I remember, years back, these candy cigarettes were a real common thing. Even if you never smoked a real cigarette in your life, chances are you had these candy ones. Kids would pretend to be all grown-up, puffin’ on ’em. Heck, nearly everyone I knew had ’em, even the goody-two-shoes kids.
But some folks got a bee in their bonnet about ’em.
Now, some folks, they say these candy cigarettes ain’t so innocent. They worry it makes kids wanna smoke real cigarettes later on. There’s been talk, studies and such, but I ain’t no scientist. All I know is, kids like to copy what they see, and if they see grown-ups smokin’, well, they gonna wanna do it too. And these candy things, they just make it easier to pretend.
How do they make that “smoke” anyway?
I heard tell it ain’t no magic. Some of ’em use this powdery candy, like them Smarties, crushed up real fine. Then you put it in your mouth, blow, and poof, looks like smoke. No fire, no nothin’, just candy dust. Kids these days, they come up with all sorts of tricks, crushin’ the candy, puttin’ it in tubes, blowin’ it out their nose. Lord have mercy!
Are they even legal anymore?

That’s a good question. I heard some folks sayin’ they were banned, but then I see kids with ’em. So, I ain’t rightly sure. Maybe some places banned ’em, some didn’t. It’s all a big mess if you ask me. Laws and such, always changin’. Hard to keep up.
So, what’s the bottom line on these candy cigarettes?
Well, I reckon it depends on who you ask. Some folks think they’re harmless fun, a little bit of pretend for the kids. Others think they’re a bad influence, leadin’ kids down the wrong path. Me? I don’t rightly know. Kids will be kids, I guess. They find a way to have fun, even if it means puffin’ on candy dust. Just gotta keep an eye on ’em, make sure they don’t get into too much trouble, that’s all.
I remember them candy cigarettes. They used to have these little red tips, like a real cigarette. Kids would walk around with ’em hangin’ outta their mouths, feelin’ all grown up. It’s funny, the things we remember. Times change, candies change, but kids, they always find somethin’ to play with, somethin’ to make-believe.
And this whole smokin’ thing…well, it ain’t nothin’ new. Folks been smokin’ somethin’ or other for ages. Whether it’s real tobacco or candy dust, I guess it’s just somethin’ people do. But these candy cigarettes, I ain’t sure they are such a good idea. Kids need to be kids, not pretendin’ to be grown-ups with bad habits. They need to play outside, learn their ABCs, and eat their vegetables. This candy smokin’ just seems silly to me.
Anyway, that’s my two cents on these candy cigarettes. They’ve been around a long time, caused a bit of a fuss, and kids still seem to like ’em. Whether they’re good or bad, that’s for you to decide. Me? I’m just an old woman, sharin’ what I know, what I seen.
