Alright, so I’ve been getting a bunch of questions about disposable vapes lately, especially about whether they’re MTL or DTL. So I figured, why not just dive in and do a little experiment myself? This way, I can give you guys some real, hands-on info instead of just repeating what you can read on some product page, you know?
First off, I grabbed a couple of different disposable vapes from the local vape shop. I made sure to get a variety, some that looked like they were designed for a tighter draw, and others that seemed like they’d be airier. I also picked up some regular e-liquid, with different nicotine strengths just for the experiment and some traditional cigarettes, which I thought that might help me make a comparison.

Then I started testing them out. I started with the ones that looked like they’d be MTL. You know, the ones with smaller air holes and a more cigarette-like shape, and I made sure to inhale the same way I would with a cigarette, drawing the vapor into my mouth first and then into my lungs. Man, some of these disposables really nailed that MTL experience. The draw was tight, the throat hit was satisfying, and it felt pretty darn close to smoking, or at least to those MTL tanks I’ve used in the past. Then I compared the traditional cigarette, the vaping style is really similar to a cigarette, so it’s very friendly to ex-smokers like me.
Then I moved on to the disposables that looked more DTL-ish, they have larger airflow channels. I tried using them like I use my sub-ohm tanks, inhaling straight to my lungs. I’ve gotta say, it felt a bit weird at first. These devices aren’t really built for that kind of airflow. I even coughed a few times. But once I got the hang of it, they performed better. They definitely produced more vapor, and the flavor was a bit more intense when I got a good DTL hit. However, the flavor is still more concentrated in MTL, because of the tiny chamber.
After messing around with these for a few days, here’s what I found. Most disposable vapes are designed for MTL. It makes sense, right? They’re trying to mimic the feel of a cigarette to help people switch to vaping. Even with higher nicotine strengths, they give you the best chance of quitting smoking. And for people new to vaping, MTL will be a better choice.
- MTL disposables: Tight draw, good throat hit, feels like smoking, great for beginners or those who want a strong nicotine hit.
- DTL on disposables: Possible with some, but not ideal. More vapor, but the draw can feel loose and the throat hit is less pronounced. You should only use low-nicotine E-Liquids for DTL, so it may be quite intense for first-time vapers.
There are also some “in-between” methods, like “Loose MTL” and “restricted DTL”. These are kinds of in the middle ground between MTL and DTL. I think some of those disposables I tried kinda fell into that category. They weren’t super tight like a classic MTL, but they weren’t wide open like a true DTL device either.
So, to wrap it up, most disposables are MTL, but you can sometimes get a restricted DTL hit from them. It really comes down to the specific device and your personal preference.
Hope this little experiment helps you guys out! It was fun for me to play around with these things and see what’s what.
